Day FOUR!  Unfortunately, only one more….

There WAS an early morning, “Polar Bear Swim” scheduled for Thursday morning, but…ahem…we all slept in.  With the exception of the lifeguard on duty for that time.  Yeah, umm, sorry man!  He was a good sport about it though…

Quiet time/Battle Plan time followed by morning devo by the Cobalt Cobras.  A devotional RAP no less, led by Sunny Day Jay.  These boys had mad skills!!

Morning chow ops…mmmmmmmmm good.  Food is good.

Back to cabin clean while learning the memory verse of the day:  Romans 8:37.

We gathered back at the Rally Point to hit on the last two pieces of armor:  The Shield of Faith and The Sword of the Spirit.

The Roman battle shield was very tall and was usually made out of wood and animal skins stretched over the frame.  They were then soaked in water so they could extinguish the firey arrows of the enemy.

Finally, “the sword of the Spirit, which is the Word of God.”  We learned that the Greek word for “Word” in this sentence is rhema, which means the SPOKEN word of God.  Scripture applied through speaking it.  We talked about how Jesus used the sword of the Spirit when he was tempted by Satan in the wilderness and how we can use it in our daily lives.

The groups broke up for their small group times.  Some did “Trust Falls” as a faith object lesson (the 5th and 6th grade boys caught Cornfed Johnson…that’s FAITH baby!).  Others continued to digest “The Gospel of Pushups” they had seen the night before.  Great to watch these Warriors wrestle with all that was packed in that!

The rest of the day was much the same as the previous days.  Except for our evening competition….

After evening chow, we did a quick wrap up of the previous evenings activities and then broke for some oven prepared SMORES!  Since there was a burn ban, we couldn’t do them via fire, but we all had our fill.

We returned to the Rally Point to check out the skit competition.  Lots of pranking the counselors and directors and the disturbing introduction of C-PAP-Man…kind of a cross between Darth Vader and Snuffleuppagus.  Yeah.

We capped the evening by honoring our 6th graders.  While we can’t share it all (as we don’t want to spoil the surprise for our newbies for next year), suffice it to say that each young man was challenged, encouraged and honored.  Tanner, Jordan, Lucas and Dane:  Never forget…you are DANGEROUS FOR GOOD.  We look forward to seeing what the Lord Jesus is going to do in you and through you in the years to come!

Get ready for bed, story time, LIGHTS OUT!

In Him,

Jason & Matt

Day THREE!!  What an awesome day….

After the Warriors had some Quiet Time/Battle Plan time in their cabins, we heard a great Green Gladiator devotional, then headed in for morning chow ops.

The memory verse for Day 3 was Joel 3:9.  While the boys were cleaning their cabins vying for the coveted Golden Scepter, I mean, plunger, they learned Joel 3:9.

We gathered at the Rally Point to discuss two more pieces of the armor:  The “Gospel Shoes” and the Helmet of Salvation.

We learned that not only we need “the shoes” on to stand firm (Paul says to stand firm in this Eph. 6 passage numerous times – and he was referring to the Roman military sandals that had 1″ to 3″ spikes on them!!  Woof!),  we are also messengers too…carrying the Gospel of Peace to a dark world needing His light and Life.  The helmet protects us — specifically protects the head and the brain in it!  We used counselor Brad “Cornfed” Johnson to illustrate how having the helmet on can give a buffer between his head and the messages the enemy is trying to get in his head.  Good stuff!

We traveled to our Training Time for more high ropes, low ropes, mini golf and woodburning.  Most all of our boys at least tried if not conquering the high ropes and zip line!  We were proud of them all!  Also the creativity that we saw with all the groups in woodburning was really neat.  If some of them made a “mistake” on burning the simple sheild template, they would turn that into creative opportunity to make something cool out of it.  This is problem solving at it’s best!  We didn’t intend for this project to have so many deeper levels, but I guess the Lord did.  Very cool.

Had some chow, followed by FOB and snack shack time.  Many sugary substances had by all….

Back to the pool for our daily dose of water basketball (getting past the Two Towers of Power – Jay Volk and Brett Femrite – proved a formitable task), chicken fights and water slides.  By this time in the week, we had a few guys who’s feet were a little torn up from all of the swimming and planting off the pool bottom, so we opened up mini-golf as an option during this time too.

Back for some Good ol’ Camp Copass chow, then we offered “dessert” (or in your printed books DESERT…much less tasty :-) ) for the boys back in the Rally Point meeting room.

If you’ll check out an earlier post (The Gospel of Pushups) you’ll get the idea.  We reenacted this by offering the boys Snickers that our counselor Eric Burns then “paid for” by doing 5 pushups for each person in the room.  When asked, “___________, would you like a Snickers?”, whether he answered, “Yes” or “No”, Eric paid for the Snickers.  I lost count, but in all, Eric ended up doing between 300 to 310 pushups.  After about the first 10 boys were asked, then the questions started to come:

“How come HE has to do all the pushups?”/”Can I do my own pushups?” Answer:  No.  When we were planning camp, I had a standard of perfection.  Eric made every meeting, turned in all of his paperwork on time, never grumbled, got all of his project work done in a timely fashion.  No one else met my standards.  You didn’t make any of my meetings…it doesn’t matter whether you knew about the meetings or not — I had them, expected perfect attendence, etc, and you didn’t measure up.  So, you cannot do your own pushups.

Eric was the only one worthy to do the pushups.  He and I made a deal before you all got here, that he would do 5 pushups for each person who walked in the door in order for them to have the opportunity to have the gift of a Snickers.  The Snickers HAVE to be paid for, and Eric is the only one who can pay for them.

(Troy Prestenberg’s boys actually HAD come to one of the meetings, and so they tried to help by saying…”Well, we went to one of the meetings, doesn’t that count?”  To which I answered, “Yes, that’s true and I’m glad you go to come to that meeting, but you didn’t come to all of them – which was my standard – so, no it doesn’t count”)

“What’s in it for him?” Answer: These Snickers are REALLY good and Eric loves you all enough to give you the opportunity have one for yourself.  But, they have to be paid for, and since he’s the only one who can pay for them, he is willing to do just that.  Because of his love for you.  It’s not about him, it’s about you.

…you get the picture.  This was AWESOME.  Such a wonderful reminder of the price that Jesus paid in order to give us the free (already paid for) gift of salvation, so that we can enjoy and eternal relationship with God the Father.  However, just like some of the boys who didn’t want a Snickers – either they didn’t like them, or they didn’t want to see Eric suffer anymore – there are some people who don’t and won’t accept this free (already paid for) gift that Jesus gives us.

God’s standard is perfection.  Because of the fall of Adam and Eve, we have all been born spiritually dead (all of us are decendants of theirs!)…falling short of God’s standard.  However, because God loves us so much, He “made a deal” with Jesus.  Jesus willingly paid the price (He came to earth, lived a perfect and sinless life and met God’s standard.  Therefore, He was the only one worthy to pay for the gift) so that we could have access to this gift of eternal LIFE.  This gift of eternal life with God was paid for by Jesus over 2000 years ago.  The gift awaits you, with your name on it.  Will you open the gift and take possession of it?  Or will you leave it under the tree, unopened?

But we digress…

Eight boys (that we know of) made the decision this night to accept the gift of salvation that Jesus Christ paid for.  They chose to accept Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior!!  PRAISE THE LORD!  We were REALLY jazzed about that!

Eric Burns, thank you so much again for making the physical sacrifice of pushups to illustrate this eternal truth.  Thank you for allowing the Lord to utilize you in this way!  It will not be forgotten.

We left the Rally Point to do our team competition:  Land Wars.  Three games: Water Balloon Launch, Sponge Pass, Tug O War.  Much fun had by all!

Clean up, Story Time, Lights out!

End of Day Three.  Thank you Lord for how you revealed Yourself to us this day!

Day TWO!

Woke up, had some quiet time (some cabins quieter than others :-) ) and some GOOD OL’ CAMP COPASS CHOW!!!  While we were waiting in line the Golden Griffons gave a great devotional concerning David and Goliath.

The memory verse for Day Two was 2 Corinthians 10:4.

We talked about the first to pieces of the armor of God:  The Belt of Truth & The Breastplate of Righteousness.  With truth, the enemy fights us with things that are true but not the TRUTH…we talked a little about “Learning to Discern” the difference.  Our friend Scott Wolfe put together a diagram that helps quite a bit as you are trying to sort out those messages that drop into our heads.

Righteousness…we talked about the fact that our own self-righteousness is kind of like wearing a medal on your uniform (Look at me!  Look at what I did!) and in NO WAY protects you from the enemy’s pin pointed attacks at your heart.  We need Christ’s Righteousness to cover us.

Each grade broke up into their small groups for a discussion, playing the game “Minefield” to drive the point home that we need to listen and focus on THE VOICE of Truth to guide us through the traps and snares the enemy lays out for us.

We broke for our “Training Time” which consisted of high ropes, low ropes, mini-golf and our wood burning project.

Back to chow, a little F.O.B. (flat on back time) and they were off to the snack shack…no doubt loading up on vegtables and other highly nutritious vittles (um, right!).

Then off to swim time.  The sounds of water basketball, sliding, and chicken fights filled the air….

Back to chow and then we moved to behind the cabins to watch some awesome swordfighting!!!!  David Browning and his sensei Brian did some sparring and then allowed the boys to take some shots at them.  It was a lot of fun.  Thank you Dave and Brian for making the trip and making some cool memories!

We then prepared for, that’s right, MORE POOL TIME!  In the form of our “Sea Battle”.  Team competition games consisting of, “Float the Moat”, “Junior Counselor Relay”, “Popcorn” and “Dive for Treasure”.  Good times…

Then, back to the cabins, story time (each grade had one of two stories from Max Elliot Anderson – North Woods Poachers and Secret of Abbott’s Cave), and LIGHTS OUT!

All slept well….

Day 1 is in the record books…and what an awesome day!

We arrived at Camp Copass about 45 minutes behind schedule, but caught back up later in the day.  These boys all seemed to really be enjoying themselves today.

Our memory verse today was Ephesians 6:11.

We had a good large group time where we talked about “The Grand Story God is Telling” in relation to some of their favorite movies, stories, etc.  Borrowing from Eldridge’s “Waking The Dead”, I highlighted the 3 major themes in all great, epic stories:

1.  Things are not what they seem.

2.  We were born into a world already at war.

3.  You have a crucial role to play.

We had TONS of participation…it was great.  Our junior counselors who are doing worship: David Collins, Ryan Shelton, Daniel Ferguson, Jaret Benson and David Schwarz are doing a phenominal job!!  We have SUCH a talented group!

We had about 1:30 in the pool this afternoon, which was some much needed cool.  It was awesome weather though…not oppresive heat like last week.

We rounded out the day with a rousing game of SLIME PIT KICKBALL!  Kickball, yet much messier!  Each base was a baby pool filled with something wonderfull:  1st base – instant mashed potatoes; 2nd base – baked beans; 3rd base – oatmeal; Home Plate – flour.  There were 7 outs per side with a 3 inning limit.  Most boys were caked with slime.  It was greatness! :-)

We are going to dive in to the different pieces of the armor of God tomorrow, starting with the Belt of Truth and the Brestplate of Righteousness.  Please continue to pray as we are really treading on enemy occupied terratory.

We will also be having David Browning and his swordsmanship sensei Brian join us tomorrow evening to do a swordmnship demonstration…should be awesome.

Well, I am sitting outside the camp office poaching their wireless signal and about to pass out :-) .  I’m wiped, but your boys are doing great and we are SO blessed to have them.  You have no idea how much!

In His Strength,

Jason & Matt
